Logo + Screen Printing

Katelyn and I met up briefly after class on Monday to decide on the logo that we would get printed onto our team tshirts. This is the logo we decided on.

We then had a group meeting on Tuesday so that I could collect everyones tshirts to get the logo screen printed on to. We also discussed what was still needed to organize as far as sourcing and constructing all components necessary for the day of the market.

Meeting with the Tutors

We met with tutors today to discuss how our interventions went and how they have affected our idea.

When we said people will be writing on clothes they said how difficult it will be and that it would slow the process and flow of our stall down. They suggested paper t-shirts instead, as in paper cut up in the shape of t-shirts, much easier to write on and still gives the clothes effect.

However, we had a discussion as a group whether to use MDF or paper as our clothes. We decided on paper as it will be cheaper and easier to write on because otherwise it would be paint as another cost for the MDF and then we have to test how easy it would be to write on a painted surface. So we are sticking with paper. The tutors said you can easily laser cut about 250 t-shirts at a time, however we are pretty sure that would set on fire!

so we will use a template and craft knife multiple t-shirts at once, we also thought it would make it more interesting to have pants as well as underwear shapes, just to mix things up. We will be making the clothes out of A3 so that they are a good size to write on.

We will be putting up paper t-shirts and clothes before the market begins which has the serious secrets from our trials scribed on them. This is so people can see how the idea works and also sets boundaries and a atmosphere of what people are actually writing about so it's taken more seriously.

Our station works in a circuit formation, two ironing boards with a 'washing machine' (made out of a cardboard box with a picture of a washing machine on the front, with the door cut out so you can reach in) beside each ironing board on a stool so that the washing machines are higher, so people can drop their t-shirts into the top of them easily.

Our rules will be printed on paper in the shape of t-shirts and blu-taked to the walls about each ironing board, this makes it clear when people are writing, what they can and cannot say. That means our t-shirts will be white and just have the logo on the back and on the front, so people know what stall we belong to and who to talk to if they have questions.

We thought about spraying febreeze through the area to give the laundry smell and atmosphere.

At our meeting last week, the VCD students decided that we wanted to get a logo going for our stall.
So I've just put together a few concepts to start off with.

Trial Results

We left our trials up for 2 days. 

I then went to collect them and was annoyed when I realised one of them had been completely removed and was no-where to be seen. When set up the previous day some older students moved it to the side because they were setting up a coffee stand type thing for the morning, however I went to talk to them and they said they would be gone by 2pm and would put it back for me when they left. 

I don't know if it was put up and someone took it or someone just thought it was rubbish, either way don't trust people. 

Also someone stole the sharpie from one of the interventions so obviously we have to tie down the pens as people like to steal. 

With that in mind, the other two were still intact, one with a line and pegs, and one without

The one placed in the industrial building got less participation, however this was the one with the line being displayed so maybe people weren't keen to have their secrets displayed, also because there may have been less foot traffic.

A you can see most people didn't seem to put down serious things. But some people do seem to be participating probably which is nice. We didn't have rules displayed which was a bad call, and we should have remembered the point of the exercise is to test a few aspects not just one.

The other intervention was placed in Te Ara Hihiko by the kitchen on a table. This got a lot more responses and although a lot were just stupid and some advertising for the wardrobe, people had noticed it and wanted to interact with it which is great that we got response at all.

This may have had a larger amount of participation because of the foot traffic, the people in the building or even the fact that you had to put it in a box and that was it, no public display at all.

I had a thought that it would be interesting to have these boxes set up everywhere and keep collecting people secrets and responses and then print them large and display them on walls of our stalls as an art installation at the market..however we would only use serious sounding secrets such as 'I stole a girls work book becuz she stole my computer on D floor. Sorry xxx' 

It would be interesting to have them blown up large and have a large display. however we really like the idea of interaction still, and not sure if we could just change our idea to an installation that people look at and the tutors will probably think it's not very original or creative enough.

So tomorrow we need to talk together as a group and see if we need another trial with a voting booth type thing made out of cardboard to see if that affected people and what they wrote. Making it more serious. 

More Testing

After our tutor bookings with two of the tutors (can't remember their names), they basically told us that we were still at the concept stage (which I actually highly disagree with) and encouraged us to do some more testing.

We had a discussion about whether people would be okay with writing their confessions and then having to pin them up in front of everyone. It might make people feel a little bit awkward, and that they couldn't actually write what they actually wanted to incase people saw and knew that it was theirs.

We have had this discussion earlier, and resolved it with the Confession Garden - having little nooks and crannies for people to roll up their confession and hide it. But somewhere along the process of developing the idea to a laundry/washing line, these thoughts got lost in translation.

So today Charlotte set up a couple of stations around the campus to test whether people were more inclined to post confessions if they didn't know that they had to put up their confession on the line.
I went back to the stations after 4 or so hours of them being set up, and it seemed as though the station without the line had more hits, but there could also be other factors - traffic flow etc.

So tomorrow, we are going to swap the stations over, to see if it's just a matter of the amount of people walking through the different buildings or not.

Team Meeting

Today we had a group meeting to discuss and finalize certain aspects of our market stall before the tutor bookings scheduled for Wednesday.

In this meeting:

• We talked about how we wanted people to interact with our market stall. We thought that perhaps sticking vinyl cut instructions on the floor would work best as far as guiding people through our instillation.

• We decided that instead of having people write their confessions on pieces of paper it would be more appropriate to gather second hand clothing to write on so as to continue our washing line theme further.

• Looked at layout, so how the different elements would be set out in the space we are provided with. The three main elements would be one or two old washing machine(s) (depending on what we can get hold of) filled with second hand t-shirts and other scrap materials for people to write their confessions on, a couple of ironing boards with clamps attached (see drawings above) to stretch out the t-shirts/material and make them easier to write on, and a washing line to hand the t-shirts/materials on. We want the three steps (pick a t-shirt, write confession and then hang it on the line) to be in a logical order so as to not cause chaos on the day. We want the washing machines and ironing boards to be slightly separated from the washing line and have that section to have an indoor feel, whilst giving the washing line area an outdoor feel. Refer to the image below to see how we want the layout to look. Were are going with the top layout as we decided the bottom layout would probably take up too much space.

• We planned out how to build the washing line structure and how it would look. We decided that concrete bases would work best to provide stability, and would also be the cheapest and most efficient way of doing this.

• We wrote a to do list stating all of the things we need to do before market day and also wrote a shopping list of all the things we need to buy for our market stall.

Week 7 Presentation Reflection

Pretty stoked with how the presentation went. It seemed as though the video was well received - hearing laughter from the audience at times really cemented that we had successfully brought back the humour and light-hearted feel back to our experience, which was a huge plus!

Seeing all of the other presentations were good also, as we were able to see that we still had a point of difference about the thing we were offering - no other stall has an idea which crosses over with ours.

But it has also made us realise how much some of the other groups had done, in terms of planning, and how much more we need to do between now and the Market Palace!

Creating our Presentation

Today we meet up for a few hours and went through our idea and made our presentation for Wednesday.

Our idea has now changed from a grotto of secrets and a garden theme, to hanging out your dirty laundry. This changed our idea because now we will have a free standing washing line structure which people will peg up notes which express what's on their mind. During the trial a few people mentioned it was like the act of 'hanging out your dirty laundry' we decided this would be a way to push our idea further and make it more creative and fun.

A t-shirt will be hung from the washing line which has the rules on it so it's nice and clear because from the trial we realised people swear, use names and are sometimes culturally insensitive. Because this will be open for people to read we don't want it to offend anyone as it is supposed to be an anonymous, fun and almost cleansing experience to get things off your chest.

Our presentation has a voice over explaining our project along with a 3D model of what our experience will look like, as well as a very simple t-shirt design to explain our concept.  

We will be brainstorming names for the official market but for now we have gone with 'on the line.' Other options discussed today were:
