Market Palace

The Market Palace was a great success for ThirtySix, we were so pleased to have all the interest, contribution, and to see people sending snapchats throughout the day.

Overall, we thought the day ran smoothly, with a large amount of people confessing, and our  successful stall set up contributed to this result.

From set up the day before the Market, we had our stall layout planned and understood by every group member, which made for an effective set up. The washing line turned out great, with the concrete bases inclosed in cardboard boxes, lined with rubbish bags. As pointed out by the facilitators, we needed to be extra cautious with putting concrete straight onto the Great Hall floors.

On the morning of the Market, we were ready for our pitch, deciding it would be more effective to have two people explaining our stall, while the rest interacted with steps of the demonstrations. From what we saw, the tutors were happy with what we had achieved, and how far our concept had grown from our initial 'Grotto/Garden Confessions'.

Throughout the day, we had a maximum of 2 people at the stall at one time; this was agreed as a group to try our best to encourage (not scare away!) potential confessors. With our stall layout, people who interacted with the stall easily understood where to go, and what to do. It was great to see some students reading the confessions, and then coming and contributing their own.

Construction

The construction of the washing line required a bit of forethought and planning. During a team meeting we came to the conclusion the best way to construct out washing line structure so it could be free standing (to go in the great hall) would be to set the wooden frame into a concrete base.

After figuring out some technical specifications for the wooden frame and deciding what height would be best suited for people it didn't take us long to get to work.

The process of constructing the washing line involved cutting the wood into the appropriate lengths; screwing the two components together; drilling the holes for the line to go through; and finally setting the posts into their concrete bases.

Washing Basket

Hey guys! We are welcome to use this washing basket to 'dispose your dirty laundry' at the Market Palace. It is below waist height, so may be perfect for sitting in-between the ironing boards; an easy access area for both writing stations. :)

Also, I have a ironing board available- if we can just find one more?

Logo + Screen Printing

Katelyn and I met up briefly after class on Monday to decide on the logo that we would get printed onto our team tshirts. This is the logo we decided on.

We then had a group meeting on Tuesday so that I could collect everyones tshirts to get the logo screen printed on to. We also discussed what was still needed to organize as far as sourcing and constructing all components necessary for the day of the market.

This is the mockup the screen printer sent me of what the t-shirts will look like.

Meeting with the Tutors

We met with tutors today to discuss how our interventions went and how they have affected our idea.

When we said people will be writing on clothes they said how difficult it will be and that it would slow the process and flow of our stall down. They suggested paper t-shirts instead, as in paper cut up in the shape of t-shirts, much easier to write on and still gives the clothes effect.

However, we had a discussion as a group whether to use MDF or paper as our clothes. We decided on paper as it will be cheaper and easier to write on because otherwise it would be paint as another cost for the MDF and then we have to test how easy it would be to write on a painted surface. So we are sticking with paper. The tutors said you can easily laser cut about 250 t-shirts at a time, however we are pretty sure that would set on fire!

so we will use a template and craft knife multiple t-shirts at once, we also thought it would make it more interesting to have pants as well as underwear shapes, just to mix things up. We will be making the clothes out of A3 so that they are a good size to write on.

We will be putting up paper t-shirts and clothes before the market begins which has the serious secrets from our trials scribed on them. This is so people can see how the idea works and also sets boundaries and a atmosphere of what people are actually writing about so it's taken more seriously.

Our station works in a circuit formation, two ironing boards with a 'washing machine' (made out of a cardboard box with a picture of a washing machine on the front, with the door cut out so you can reach in) beside each ironing board on a stool so that the washing machines are higher, so people can drop their t-shirts into the top of them easily.

Our rules will be printed on paper in the shape of t-shirts and blu-taked to the walls about each ironing board, this makes it clear when people are writing, what they can and cannot say. That means our t-shirts will be white and just have the logo on the back and on the front, so people know what stall we belong to and who to talk to if they have questions.

We thought about spraying febreeze through the area to give the laundry smell and atmosphere.

A logo concept

This was the one I quickly created for the posters that were up during the trials:

These are the logo concepts I came up with…
